E-commerce is the need of the hour. Ever since its introduction, it has only grown stronger and has become an indispensable part of our daily lives. People prefer to shop online as it saves time and reduces the effort. Due to this high demand, there is a fierce competition among e-commerce websites. Almost every day a new e-commerce website comes into existence. This calls for the need to have robust and advanced e-commerce solution. An ecommerce web design requires a flexible and powerful e-commerce solution to fare better than others.
Magento and Oscommerce are two of the well known e-commerce solutions preferred by a majority of people when they go for ecommerce website development. Both have their own set of features and advantages to offer. But which one is the best solution?
Let us first discuss about Oscommerce. It is an opensource ecommerce that helps to manage an online store in an effective way. Although it is easy to install but it is quite a hassle to configure and customize it. Oscommerce only requires a shared web hosting account to run the online store. However, Oscommerce does not offer features like Coupons, multiple product images, different pricing per customer group, graphic template system etc. It also does not allow administrator to edit products in order. It does not even offer the multi store support. Its back end system is not as good as Magento.
Magento is comparatively an advanced and highly flexible solution that offers a plenty of useful features. It requires dedicated servers from particular hosting providers in order to run fast shops. Magento shopping cart is easy to update. It has a lot of add-on modules to offer. These modules help to extend the functionality of the store. Some of the useful features provided by Magento Ecommerce are coupons, order editing, SEO urls and meta tags, abandoned shopping cart reporting, product comparisons, editable order emails, shipping estimator in shopping cart etc.
Besides these features, it has everything that Oscommerce lacks in. It has a well organized back end along with cleaner site structure. Thus it can be said that Magento fares better than Oscommerce in terms of features. For custom ecommerce development, it is important to analyse the basic requirements of the site. A small website with limited number of products can easily make do with Oscommerce and perform well. However, a big and complex website with large number of products will definitely require Magento to handle everything in a proper manner.
