The difficulties involved and faced while making biogas plants mandatory in Kerala hotels and restaurants will now be looked by the City Corporation as on the demand and request by the Kerala Hotels and Restaurants Association (KHRA) district unit.
Recently few days back an assembly was held in Kerala, during which the Local Self-Government Minister Paloli Mohammedkutty announced that the restaurants and Hotels in Kerala must have the biogas plants. Establishment of these plants in turn will bring down quantity of waste accumulating in Vilappilsala waste treatment plant. Although, the project can take place in luxury hotels of Kerala but is not possible in the case of those restaurants or hotels functioning in rented properties. In addition, the hotels, which do not have enough space for the set up, will not be able to accomplish the plants. Thus, Kerala Tours are quite popular worldwide. The corporation Mayor has approved the project and had shown a positive attitude towards the establishment but the rules would be implemented only after considering all practical difficulties. Things will be charged only when everything is under control and confidence.
To take the situation under control a solution is been advised by the Sudhesh Kumar, president of both the state and district units of KHRA, that a common waste treatment facility for a group of restaurants should be set up. According to him, a pilot project with the support of Kochi Corporation has been started by the KHRA district unit. However, due to problems faced due to labors the project was scrapped. Moreover, he suggested that a common biogas plant for a group of restaurants can solve the issue largely. The district unit has only 800 members and more than 800 are yet not in the group. Although they used to have large number of members, but when the membership got restricted to those with license, it automatically fell down. Sudhesh Kumar requests that the existing rules should be made mandatory for the new Kerala hotels and the old ones be given time to implement the rules.
