In addition to be remarkably successful and genius business owners, Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm, are now being recognized as two of New York’s most fashionable people. StyleCaster included the hospitality moguls on their annual list, The 50 Most Stylish New Yorkers.
To be fair, individuals were not picked based upon expensive, trendy couture collections or fresh runway attires, but rather a more unique, and self-inspired look. Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm, partners in EMM Group, were chosen simply because they are always on top of their game. StyleCaster hit the nail on the head when they said Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm “keep us inspired, surprised, and let’s be honest, a bit jealous.” Mark Birnbaum and his partners keep us inspired in many ways. Between their trendy hot spots like SL, Catch, Abe & Arthur’s, and Tenjune, all in the Meatpacking District, and the A-List parties and their luxurious lifestyle, EMM Group owners are admired by Most Yorkers. Their style is just an added bonus.
Mark Birnbaum recognizes high fashion, and has a level of respect for it. In US Weekly, we learned that “Birnbaum owns a rare pair of Converse, designed and signed by John Varvatos. ‘He made four pairs, and I got one of them. They’re like an art piece, so I put them in a glass display case,’ he says.” While we are busy admiring Birnbaum and Remm, they are inspired by fashion forward celebrities like Jay Z and Kanye West for their unique day to night attire. Being recognized for their innovative fashion sense is just another accomplishment of the already exceptionally successful pair.

Mark Birnbaum has quickly become the hospitality industry’s leading man, along with partners Eugene Remm and Michael Hirtenstein. Since 2006, when Mark Birnbaum partnered up with Remm and Hirtenstein to form EMM Group, the three business moguls have managed to transform the Meatpacking District in New York City. Catch, SL, Abe & Arthur’s, Tenjune, and Lexington Brass are just some of the venues in the Meatpacking District that have been produced by EMM Group.
EMM Group consists of over 700 employees and continues to expand each and every year. Mark Birnbaum brings his experience and chic taste to the table and infuses an innovative energy into every new project. He works year-round to balance the fundamentals of business ownership and operation, making him a truly successful entrepreneur in a city where most struggle to make it.
EMM Group recognized the lack of establishments that successfully offer multiple experiences within the same place. This ignited Mark Birnbaum and his partners to create multi-faceted venues that could cater to an array of crowds. For example, their first restaurant called Abe & Arthur’s, considered an “instant success”, has their nightclub lounge, SL, right next door. Two blocks away is yet another venue, Tenjune. These dynamics accommodate an assortment of patrons which has inevitably contributed to EMM Group’s success as a company. Following suit is Mark Birnbaum’s much anticipated venue located at 199 Bowery. It has been confirmed that the venue is the most versatile yet with a bakery and cafe, a dining room that will specialize in Asian fusion dishes, and a lower level jazz club. It is no secret that EMM Group stands far above the rest in the hospitality industry.
It didn’t take long for Birnbaum to recognize that his drive and knack for the industry could take him to the top, but no one could have envisioned the level of success he would reach with EMM Group partners Eugene Remm and Michael Hirtenstein. The partnership of Mark Birnbaum, Eugene Remm and Michael Hirtenstein was a recipe for instant success. Each partner brings unparalleled experience and industry insight to the table that continues to heighten industry standards.

Dubbed by Forbes magazine as one of the “New Kings of New York Nightlife, ” he along with partners Eugene Remm and Michael Hirtenstein have created a number of successful restaurants and nightlife venues with a winning combination of atmosphere, entertainment, top-quality service and sophistication.
In the past six years Birnbaum and his partners have built a strong venue portfolio and a solid reputation as leaders in the hospitality industry, organizing several hundred events and developing the company into a multi-faceted hub for successful venue ownership and operation. With the opening of Tenjune (2006), named in honor of his and Remm’s June 10th birthday, the pair was quickly recognized for their ability to reinvent the status quo, filling the room night after night with guests eager for a new experience. Tenjune boasted a never-before-seen layout, a rotation of up-and-coming DJ talent and surprise performances on a nightly basis, giving the venue instant yet long-lasting appeal.
Mark Birnbaum’s next venture extended the EMM Group formula for new, trend-setting hospitality and lifestyle projects across the Hudson into their first hotel venture, The Chandelier Room at the W Hoboken (2008), which boasts spectacular indoor – outdoor views of the New York City skyline.
Identifying a need for establishments that could offer multiple experiences within the same property, Birnbaum and his partners opened their first restaurant, a steakhouse concept called Abe & Arthur’s (2009), which Zagat called an “instant success”. Right next door, they opened doors to SL (2009), a highly anticipated subterranean lounge on 14th Street just two blocks shy of Tenjune, providing a one-two punch in dining and entertainment.
Birnbaum and his partners expanded eastward, taking over the coveted lease of a landmark East Hampton property, transforming it into a Manhattan-worthy luxury nightclub, aptly named SL East (2011).
This past Fall EMM Group debuted Lexington Brass (2011), a New American brasserie located on the ground level of a new luxury Hyatt hotel in Midtown Manhattan. In the same month, Birnbaum and his partners opened CATCH (2011), a multi-level seafood restaurant in the heart of the Meatpacking district, helmed by Executive Chef, Top Chef season 3 winner, Hung Huynh. The restaurant boasts over 260-seats and includes a glass enclosed rooftop lounge, CATCH Roof (2011).
In the upcoming months Birnbaum, along with Remm and Hirtenstein, are taking the CATCH concept and heading to the Miami market, opening a second location of the widely popular seafood restaurant in South Beach at the James Hotel. They will also be opening a yet-to-be-named nightclub at the hotel that will be sure to attract the same stars and revelers that frequent EMM Group’s New York outposts.
Looking ahead, EMM Group is expanding its New York portfolio with the most ambitious project to date, opening a 19,000-square foot location on New York’s historical Bowery that will house a number of different concepts, including the possibility of a bakery, restaurant, live music venue and lounge. The new property is expected to open in November 2012.
With over 700 employees on the EMM Group roster, Birnbaum and his partners continue to expand and infuse innovative energy into an ever-changing industry, pioneering multi-faceted hospitality experiences while working to maintain a balance between the operational and promotional principles in which the company was founded. Mark Birnbaum lives in the Meatpacking District and is actively involved in charitable organizations including the Meatpacking District Initiative, Kids for Tomorrow, the John Varvatos Stuart House Benefit
